RESUMO

Functional compressive bandaging (FCB) is a therapeutic resource used to control lymphedema resulting from the treatment of breast cancer. However, the reliability of the technique is unknown. We evaluated intra- and inter-rater reliability of the spiral technique in the four-layer FCB of the arm and forearm in breast cancer survivors with lymphedema. Forty-five breast cancer survivors with a mean age of 64.88±10.01 years participated in the study. Evaluations were performed by two examiners at different times analyzing the pressure exerted (mmHg) by the spiral FCB in the arm and forearm of the upper limb affected by lymphedema. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC2,1) was used to determine intraand inter-examiner reliability, with a 95% confidence interval, minimum detectable change, and standard error of the measurement. Intrarater reliability was considered low to high in the arm and forearm region. Inter-rater reliability in the arm region was considered low and in the forearm region low to moderate. Our results indicate that spiral FCB has low to moderate intra-examiner and inter-examiner reliability.

RESUMO

Vocal fold leukoplakia (VFL) has a risk of malignant transformation. Therefore, patients can have symptoms such as dysphonia, vocal strain, difficulty breathing, and dysphagia. Additionally, there is a genetic predisposition that can be associated with genetic polymorphisms. We aimed to evaluate the influence of genetic polymorphisms and protein levels in the etiology of VFL. Our study followed the PRISMA checklist and was registered on PROSPERO database. The questions were: "Are genetic polymorphisms involved in the etiology of VFL? Are protein levels altered in patients with VFL?". Eligibility criteria were case control studies that compared the presence of polymorphisms or/and protein levels of subjects diagnosed with VFL and healthy controls. Of the 905 articles retrieved, five articles with a total of 1038 participants were included in this study. The C allele of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP)-819 T/C IL-10, A allele of the SNP -592 A/C IL-10, CT genotype of the SNP rs11886868 C/T BCL11A, GG genotype of the SNP rs4671393 A/G BCL11A, LL genotype, and L allele of (GT)n repeat polymorphisms of the HO-1 were risk factors for VFL development. Nevertheless, there was a lack of association between VFL and the -1082 A/G IL-10, rs14024 CK-1, and -309 T/G Mdm2 SNPs. The concentrations of the MDM2, BCL11A, and HO-1 proteins were modified, while IL-10 levels were normally expressed in these subjects. In conclusion, most markers evaluated in this review could be potential indicators to develop effective therapies, avoiding a malignant transformation of the lesion.

The present study was aimed to evaluate different (semi-solid) media for the production of Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana propagules, and to evaluate the tolerance of these propagules to ultraviolet radiation and temperature. The experiments were performed at the Biological Control Laboratory of the Instituto Biológico at Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. For both fungi, 6 repetitions were performed for each of the 17 treatments: corn starch, full rice, parboiled rice, type-1 rice, type-2 rice, oat flakes, canjiquinha [grits], wheat flour, raw cassava flour, yellow corn flour, special wheat flour, corn flour, corn in grains, cassava starch, soy in grains, crushed wheat, and turf. The viability analysis was done in plastic plates containing BDA. For the bioassays involving exposure to ultraviolet light and temperature, BDA was also used for viability analysis, and each treatment was exposed to the UV radiation for 0, 25 and 50 seconds, the temperature exposure being at 20, 25, 30 and 35º C. Using a Potter tower, 2 mL of fungus suspension from each treatment was inoculated to the Diatraea saccharalis caterpillars. Regarding the sporulation, the largest concentrations of M. anisopliae and B. bassiana were found for the treatments with parboiled rice, type-1 rice, type-2 rice, yellow corn flour, corn flour and crushed wheat. The viability of all treatments was superior to 94.00%. Also, the longer the duration of the exposition to the UV, the 2Universidade Estadual Paulista, Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas, Botucatu, SP, Brasil.

RESUMO

In wastewater treatment some process variables may be very difficult to measure directly because of the non-availability or excessive cost of sensors. An alternative is to use "soft sensors" that provide online estimates of these inaccessible variables by calculations based on auxiliary measurable variables. Two such sensors are proposed based on extended Kalman filtering or neural networks that could enable the monitoring of nitrate ion, ammonium ion and carbonaceous matter concentrations during nitrification of wastewater.

RESUMO

Although sporotrichosis is not an AIDS-defining infection, reports of sporotrichosis in individuals infected with HIV are increasing. We report an unusual case of this co-infection in a man with progressive deep cutaneous ulcerations with numerous pleomorphic yeast cells of Sporothrix schenckii. In addition a review of the literature on this subject was carried out and commented upon.

RESUMO

An adaptive control scheme is developed for the optimization of a fed-batch ethanol production process. The fermentation process is modeled by an hybrid neural model combining mass balance equations and neural networks, used to represent the kinetic rates. The networks used, the functional link networks (FLN), allow the linear estimation of their parameters; this enables the re-estimation of the parameters at each sampling time, and thus the development of an adaptive optimal control scheme.

RESUMO

A case of a 13-year-old boy with tuberous sclerosis manifested with the complete syndrome that died with a massive intratumoral hemorrhage is presented. The post mortem examination of the brain disclosed a massive left parenchymatous brain hemorrhage with intraventricular component. In the hemorrhage, near the lateral ventricle wall, a subependymal giant cell astrocytoma was found. This is the second case in the literature of tuberous sclerosis which cause of death was an intratumoral massive hemorrhage.
